The King's Speech
I'm enjoying my holiday week, braved the icy roads yesterday, and went to a movie. This was one of those movies that I was looking forward to see. My husband will tell you that it was because Mr. Darcy (Colin Firth) is in it...whatever. As much as I love Pride and Prejudice, I was drawn to the story. Did you know it is based on a true story of Queen Elizabeths father? King George VI. Maybe I fell asleep or was daydreaming during that part in European History 'cause this was my first time hearing about this.
Basically, after the death of King George V, and then after his son King Edward VIII abdicated the throne for his own personal reasons, Bertie (Firth), the Duke of York, is now the crowned King George VI. For as long as he can remember, Bertie has always suffered from a speech impediment..a stutter. After trying all these therapists, his wife (Helena Bonham Carter) seeks someone with more controversial methods (Geoffrey Rush) to help him overcome this problem. This happens right before England goes to war against Hitler, and the country needs the support of their King more than ever. Bertie's goal is to overcome his stammer, with the help of his therapist, to be able to address his people without his stammer, to be a King they can be confident in during this war. that's it in a nutshell.
I loved this movie. Both Geoffrey Rush and Colin Firth are absolutely wonderful in these roles, and it's not wonder the movie was nominated for 7 Golden Globe awards. Great story, touching, and one of my favorites this year. No action, no real romance, just a great story about the relationship between the tongue-tied king and his speech therapist. If you like those kind of movies.. you'll love this one. Why is it rated R (some of you may be asking)? Well come to find out the King has a slight temper, and when he's angry...yelling..swearing...he doesn't stammer. :) So his therapist uses that, builds on it, and it helps. So my answer to the question is language. I thought it was kinda funny. :)
Great movie, Great story, Great performances. Hope this wins an award. 8.5/10 stars.
